After successfully helping my kids navigate ACT preparation and college applications, I began working with several of my neighbors' kids to help them achieve higher ACT scores and craft successful college application essays. In the process, I discovered the joy of connecting with students of all abilities to help them achieve their college dreams. Five years later, my business is still growing through referrals from neighbors, friends, and former students.
I hope to help all of my students feel confident and prepared for a successful college journey!
Working with students on an individual basis taught me that a "one size fits all" plan is not the best way to approach the ACT and SAT. My experience and research have allowed me to develop my own methods to teach English, Reading, Science, and Writing for the ACT and Reading, Writing/Grammar for the SAT, and to help students complete college admissions essays and applications. Over the last 5 years, I have developed multiple approaches to help students of all learning styles. Additionally, I take each of the 3 tests that are released by the ACT yearly, so I stay current on the latest changes and trends and am able to adjust my content accordingly.
I am fortunate to have a wonderful Math tutor, Cali Amato, working with me. A former student of mine, Cali is a junior Accounting Major at the University of Akron and has a 3.7 GPA. Cali began working with me 3 years ago and has an amazing ability to connect with students and explain math concepts in addition to tutoring for the English, Reading, and Science sections of the ACT and Math for the SAT and PSAT.
We tutor one-on-one so that we can tailor our approach to our student's individual needs. Cali and I tutor students in not only test taking strategies, but we also do a thorough review of concepts. Forget how to use a semicolon versus a comma to separate two clauses or how to solve logarithms? We've got you covered!
Where do we meet for tutoring?
All tutoring is done out of my house in the Merriman Valley - just around the corner from Blossom Music Center. When you schedule your appointments, I will send you a confirmation with my address.
How much do you charge?
The rate is $50 per hour for all subjects as well as college essay and application preparation. The majority of students come for 1 hour at a time, but you are also welcome to request a block of 2 hours. The charge for the first visit is $85. This includes the initial assessment, first lesson, and Official ACT Prep Guide with 5 full length tests and additional online practice questions.
Occasionally, I will work with students the Saturday before a test date. The charge for weekend tutoring is $100 per hour.
What forms of payment do you take?
I take cash, check - made out to Lara Wilson, credit cards, Zelle, PayPal, and Venmo.
How do I book tutoring times ?
Please click on the Get in Touch button near the top of the website, or the Send a Message button near the bottom of the page. The information on the form will help me understand your (or your student's) needs. Next, I will contact you to schedule times.
Do you charge for missed or cancelled appointments?
I like to be flexible and understand when there is an emergency or a student gets sick during the school day, but sports and work schedules are generally available 48 hours in advance. My policy, beginning on April 15, 2019 follows:
In case of emergency or illness, there is no charge to reschedule.
All cancellations and requests to reschedule must be done at least 48 hours in advance. Cancellations and rescheduling requests less than 48 hours from the lesson will be charged the full cost of the lesson if it cannot be rescheduled within one month. While I can usually find a time to reschedule, please know that it is not always possible.

I graduated from Miami University in 1989, with a BA in History. When not working, my husband and I enjoy swimming, traveling, cooking, and hiking in the National Park with our 10 yr. old Bichon Poodle mix - Bono. I really appreciate working with your teens - especially as our two children have flown the coop!
